The earliest reportsof great calamities are often exaggerated, but in the presentinstance it does not appear as yet that the first estimate of theloss of life was overdrawn. It is certain that nothing that appealsto human pity was lacking in the appalling crisis. The colossaltragedy will arouse the sympathy of the world and efface nationalboundaries, for nothing that afflicts humanity thus grievouslyand lamentably can be foreign to us.
